Note:  There is no Discipline Book for the area that Moses was serving in, lodged with the County Record Office in Maidstone, so I cannot find out why Moses was dismissed.  The going rate for a full Police Pension after 25 years Service was around £45 per annum.  Moses of course never received this because of his dismissal.

Note supplied by John H Kitney, the grandson of Henry Walter Kitney

Henry Walter Charles Kitney  DOB  16th March 1886

Served in the Kent Constabulary at Rainham, Sevenoaks, Westerham Hill and Biggin Hill and also served in the army and saw service in Egypt in circa 1917.

It is thought  that his father Henry Joseph Kitney saw service in he Grenadiers in Canada in, 1878.  The family have a lapel badge with the inscription  Grenadiers, Canada, 1878.

Henry Walter was born 16th March 1886.  Amongst the tin of family relics there is also a lapel badge with the inscription Grenadiers, Canada, 1878.  Maybe that this was a campaign that his father Henry Joseph took part in?

Several Kitneys seemed to marry members of the ‘English’ family who were also in or involved with the Kent Police.

More details when I get time.   John H Kitney

Note supplied by Karen Carmichael

Well I have been a busy little bee and have received a reply back from the Kent Constabulary about 3 out of 4 Kitneys I will have to do a bit more research on the Superintendent Kitney but never fear it is on my list of to do things.

Okay,  I have the reason why Moses George Kitney was dismissed from the Police - he was a bit of a loose cannon/naughty Kitney!! Are we sitting comfortably? Then I will begin;

Moses George Kitney

This is the black sheep if ever there was one.

Moses George Kitney born
1 Dec 1863 at Detling and was living in Detling at the time of his application to the police 6 Mar 1883.  His trade was shown in the records as a labourer.  He became PC205 on the 20 Apr 1883
and his physical description at the time is that he was 5' 8 1/4" tall with grey eyes, brown hair and a robust build.  He was not married at the time and was recommended to the post of constable by a Reverend Brown.

Following his training at Wrens Cross,
Maidstone (the then police H.Q) our little sheep was posted to Sutton-at-Hone near Dartford on 25 May 1883.  On 20 Jan 1885 he moved into Dartford town police station where on 17 Feb 1885 he was promoted to 2nd class PC. His next move was to Wilmington on the 25 Jul 1889  where he was made 1st class PC on the 20 Oct 1890
.

14 Jan 1892 saw our little Kitney on the move once again this time to Swanscombe near Dartford but in less than a year on the 5 Jan 1893
he was moved to Aylesford the reason for this last move was because Officer Kitney was found guilty of a charge of drinking whilst on duty!!! and was demoted to 2nd class PC.
On the
6 Nov 1896 he was posted to Wrotham Heath before moving once again this time to Burham on the 23 Jun 1897.  At some stage he was promoted again to 1st class PC but this didn't last long as he was demoted again and fined 26s/3d for false entry in a diary on the 3 Mar 1898
.

On the
26 May 1901 he was once again reinstated to 1st class PC.  Unfortunately on the 4 Mar 1903 he had to move to Snodland at his own expense this was following a charge of neglect of duty when he received a severe reprimand.  Ten days later on the 14 Mar 1903
he was fined £1/6s/10d and was dismissed following yet another charge this time for refusing orders.

There is the story on Officer 205 - the naughty Kitney!!

Joseph Kitney

There is not much for Joseph as someone swiped his records 18yrs ago and they are still appealing to this day for the return of them.  What we do have is:

He applied to the police on
19 Feb 1859 and became PC66 on 1 Mar 1859.  His physical description is 5' 11" and was born in Detling.  He was a groom by trade and was recommended to the post by a Reverend Cobb.  He retired on 18 Jun 1861
after 32 years with a pension of £45/12s/6d per annum.
Everything else is contained within the stolen files.  So if anyone knows of their whereabouts please return them!

Henry Walter Charles Kitney

Henry applied to join the force on
8 May 1912 becoming PC43 on 3 Sep 1912.  His physical description is 5' 9 1/2" tall with grey eyes and brown hair (sound familiar!) He was born in Rainham in Kent on 16 Mar 1886 and was living at 250 Station Road
, Rainham.  He was a labourer by trade.  He was recommended to the post of PC by Mr J Bares. His records show that he was married but there are no details as to any children.

Following his training at Wrens Cross he was posted on
30 Nov 1912 to Sevenoaks.  On 7 Feb 1917 he resigned to join the Army rejoining the force on 4 Mar 1919 and returning to Sevenoaks.  On 20 Jan 1921 he moved to Sevenoaks Weald.  On 5 Oct 1926 he received a Coroners Commend (I assume this is a commendation) but there are no details as to what for. Then on the 11 Apr 1928 he received a Chief Constables Commend and on the 29 Dec 1930 another Coroners Commend this time for action at a caravan fire.  On 29 Dec 1930 he received a Sevenoaks Bench Commend for a smart arrest.  On the 12 May 1937
he was awarded the Coronation Medal.

OTHER KITNEY ASSOCIATIONS WITH POLICE

Three of my Kitney Great Aunts, Kate, Edie and Clara, all born in the 1880s in Rainham, were married to members of the Police Force.
